For Indonesian-born designer Liquica Anggraini fashion was never simply a hobby or a profession, it was a way of life. Growing up as an army brat in Indonesia, Liquica was constantly relocated to different regions of the lush but often tumultuous archipelago. Every move meant starting fresh with a new culture to comprehend, a new language to learn, and new friends to make. At a time when Indonesia was becoming increasingly aware of high fashion and trends in the West, Liquica soon realized that the easiest way to connect with peers was through her innate sense of style.
Liquica struck gold when she found a semi-abandoned warehouse full of vintage western clothing and ancient seconds from designers who produced in Indonesia. She paired choice pieces from the haul with batik, ikat, and other traditional Indonesian styles to develop truly original looks for herself and her friends. Demand increased and Liquica soon found herself inundated with requests for custom pieces. Before long she had opened
Srengèngè, a boutique in the bohemian city of Samarang and was designing her own line that blended traditional influences with vintage flair and a refined sexiness.
Several years later the opportunity arose for Liquica to come to New York for a brief visit. Her first few days in Manhattan were life-changing as she combed the city for inspiration; from basement level vintage stores in the East Village to the venerable design houses of Madison Avenue. Days turned to weeks, plane tickets home expired, and before long Liquica was refining her skills at FIT and bonding with other inspired fashionistas from all corners of the globe. By 2007 Liquica’s definitive vision had emerged and she began to lay the foundation for RADENRORO, her debut line in the US.
“Raden Roro” is a title given to royal girls in Indonesia and a phrase that perfectly embodies the feeling of classy exoticism so prevalent in Liquica’s designs. The RADENRORO collection made it's debut for the Fall/Winter 2008 season, and has since become known for its luxurious fabrics, vintage-inspired cuts, daring color palettes, and a truly unique flair that has captivated
fashion-savvy women around the world.
